Symptoms of a Sewage or Water Line Problem

Unfortunately, more often than not, we don’t always know that there is a sewer or water line issue until it’s too late. If you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms, call the experts before damage occurs.

Slow draining sinks, showers, tubs and toilets

If you’re noticing that it’s taking more time than usual for the water to drain from your kitchen or bathroom sinks, tubs, showers, or laundry drains, it could be due to a partially blocked, deteriorating, or collapsed sewer line.

Decreased water pressure

If you notice an unexplainable decrease in your water pressure, for example, sinks or tubs taking longer to fill, showers have less pressure, garden hoses or irrigation fail to work properly. You may have a water line that is leaking underground, that has not completely broken – causing a leak at the surface. This may be a sign that your water line is very close to rupturing, and needs to be addressed immediately. Call City Waterworks at 311 and have them investigate immediately before the line breaks and damage occurs. Call us next to provide an estimate on a repair.

Standing water or flowing water in the basement or yard

If water is gathering in one spot – where it shouldn’t be – this is a symptom of a compromised water line leaking underground. Particularly, lush looking grass could be a sign that it’s receiving more water than elsewhere, and you have a potential break on your hands. An obvious sign would be water flowing down through your yard, and onto the sidewalk and down the street – even when your sprinklers aren’t on. In the winter, telltale signs could be ice damming on sidewalks, driveways, or lawn. Call the City at 311 immediately to have your water shut off to prevent damage, and call us right after to begin the repair process.

Grey Water pooling or damp patches on the floor

A blocked sewer pipe will slowly but surely make itself known by backing up out of basement floor drains, basement showers, or basement tubs. These can often result in damp patches – if you notice one of these developing, don’t hesitate to call us to identify the problem and make repairs before it gets any worse.

Indentations, cracks or sink holes in your yard or foundations

Uneven surfaces, settling concrete sidewalks or driveways, and developing sinkholes in the grass can be a sign of either a water line problem or a sewer issue – in worst-case scenarios, both. Leaking water lines underground can cause the soil to wash away, creating a void underground. Leaking water lines can also damage the sewer lines which are usually installed beside each other in the same trench.
